Ballet 101: 4 Things to Have in Your Dance Bag

When you take a ballet class, whether you are a novice or expert, you need to bring certain items with you. Your dance bag should be large enough to accommodate all the essential items, from extra leotards and shoes to health and beauty supplies. Here are some things to make sure you have in your dance bag at all times.

Dancewear and Clothing

The first thing you should have in your dance bag is plenty of extra clothing, dance gear, and shoes. Remember to have clothing for leaving dance class (in case you aren't going straight home to change) as well as dance clothing. Even if you are arriving in your tights and leotard, have multiple extra pairs with you along with an extra pair of ballet slippers and casual shoes. Bring along extra undergarments, warm-up clothing, toe pads, and legwarmers if you wear them.

Healthcare Items

You may experience accidents or injuries during your ballet class, so make sure you are also stocking your dance bag with emergency health items. It is convenient to bring a small first aid kit with you, which should include pain relievers, antiseptic spray, bandages, ointment, and gauze. Also bring also some toe tape with you, as you are bound to use it. On a regular basis, go through your first aid kit and re-stock it so you not only have items you need but have extras just in case someone else in class needs a bandage or pain reliever.

Beauty Supplies

It is also a good idea to bring a cosmetic bag and another bag that holds hair supplies and other beauty items. When you take ballet, you need to keep your hair tied back in a tight bun to keep it out of the way. You don't want to be worrying about your hair when you are practicing your plies. To keep your hair tied back, have a comb or hairbrush, hair ties, and pins. Hairspray should also be brought with you. If you use other beauty items, such as lip balm, hand lotion, or makeup, pack that as well.

Water and Snacks

Finally, save some room in your dance bag for a water bottle and snacks. If your ballet class goes long, you may want a snack afterward before heading to your next appointment. A protein bar is a great thing to have with you at all times, as it can satisfy your hunger between meals. Fruits, nuts, and granola are other good things to carry for snacks.
